With lectures on everything from bamboo, slow money, to hemp; a film screening of The Garden; and speakers including Marion Nestle, Ari Derfel, and Paul Stamets; PLUS a party featuring El Circo and lots of great music on opening night, Greenfest SF should be pretty amazing this year! It all starts this weekend, November 7th.

It doesn’t even cost that much to attend, which I think makes it that much better – $10 if you bike there. That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Before the festival opens, there’s already plenty of activities starting with Green Week throughout the bay area, like an open house at Alemany Farm, where one can participate in urban gardening projects right here in San Francisco. Check the guide for others like this.

Saturday, November 7th
Urban Farming & Native Restoration

Description: Come out to the largest farm in San Francisco for an inspiring day of urban agriculture, native restoration, soil fertility-building and special arts activities. Help prepare the farm for winter by digging new beds, cover cropping, and general harvesting.

When: Saturday, November 7, 2009, 12noon-5pm
Where: Alemany Farm, located at 700 Alemany Blvd, San Francisco

Earlier this week I had a chance to check out Ari Derfel’s new project: Terrain Restaurant, due to open in early December. Ari’s been busy running an organic catering company and outdoor company for several years. And now his new restaurant in downtown Berkeley is due to open in December in the new David Brower Center, featuring three organic meals a day.

Its interior is being built with reclaimed wood and as much recycled material as you can imagine. Even the lamps will be hanging inside old organic vodka bottles! Terrain will include a full bar for night time, as well as a cafe. Its menu will feature a great brunch and an omnivore-friendly menu with plenty of choices for both vegans and conscious carnivores.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Ari also saved his trash for a year as part of a self-experiment that helped him build awareness on wasteful, consumer habits. This collection of garbage and recycling was finally transformed into an amazing art installation titled “Finding Away” by a man named Kuros Zahedi and will be coming to SF Greenfest mid November. Ari and Kuros will be speaking on Sunday at 4pm on the main stage.
