MC Yogi’s Birthday Party

I so wish I could make MC Yogi’s birthday party with DJ Dragonfly this coming Saturday night! Unfortunately for me, it’s my brother’s birthday and I won’t be in the bay area until August 29th, when I plan to attend the Eat Real Festival.

If you’ve recently heard songs with lyrics like “Ganesh is fresh,” you’re probably familiar with who MC Yogi is. Recently he’s even joined in Omega’s awesome Ecstatic Chant weekend in early September, which I remember very fondly, and next hewill be teaching a workshop at Kripalu!

It’s so cool to see Nick developed as a musician and yogi hip hop star! I went to yoga training with him and his wife Amanda back in 2000 at It’s Yoga. The two met back then, eventually traveled to India, and have formed Yoga Toes at Point Reyes Station since. It’s been a pleasure to reconnect with them at Yoga Journal conferences and other shindigs in recent years. But I love Point Reyes and have been meaning to see their studio – a manifestation of love and dreams come true.

Harmony Festival

Haven’t been to Health & Harmony festival in two years when I was lucky to see the best burlesque/”variety show” ever put on by the Yard Dogs, but the lineup is lookin’ pretty sweet this year with Matisyahu, Cake, India Arie, Spongle, The Orb and Dragonfly spinning til late Saturday, and Ecstatic Dance with Rhythmystic on Sunday morning in the Goddess Grove. Just wish tickets weren’t so much!

Fairfax in West Marin is my favorite area in the bay area – it’s surrounded by trees and has a neighborhood vibe that’s so relaxed. It’s beautiful for biking, hiking, or just chillin’. Here are my picks for soothing mind, body, and soul:

Visit the community board while munching on something from the Good Earth buffet.
Learn to meditate. Sit in Vipassana or volunteer at Spirit Rock with world-renowned teachers like Jack Kornfield.
If you have the time and you’re up to see the coast, drive out to Point Reyes. My favorite part is Chimney Rock. Take a guitar and a picnic and enjoy the dramatic views. On a lucky spring day you might see owls on the tree near where you park; ravens diving by the coast, and flowers blooming over the meadows.
Take a class with MC Yogi at Yoga Toes in Point Reyes Station.
Take a contact improv dance class, check out workshops, or just stop by and see who you meet at the Common Well
Have some tasty, cheap, authentic, Mexican food at Casa Manana. I recommend anything with plantains!
Enjoy awesome ice cream flavors like earl gray, vanilla lavender, or strawberry made from a local dairy at Fairfax Scoop for dessert, no doubt. There’s always a line out the door, and lots of kiddies!
Stop and soak at Frog’s, right in Fairfax, or at Shibui Gardens in San Anselmo. Frog’s is bigger, with a cold plunge, a communal tub, outdoor space, and several private ones. Shibui has a more secluded and a Japanese feel, private tubs under the trees, and happy hour 2-1 specials M-F.
If you’ve lasted this long and still have energy, slip into something comfortable and get your groove on at Groove Garden, a “dance sanctuary” held the first Saturday of every month in a church at Sir Francis Drake. The party has two rooms to choose from, and DJ Dragonfly spins all kinds of funky beats in the main room while people chill and trade massage in the second room.
