It was nice to bring closure to my visit to the bay area with an invite from Tyler to Sunday morning’s Ecstatic Dance in Oakland. Not only did my friends from Conscious Dancer magazine extend their wedding celebration there, but Jenny and many Acroyoga teachers from the west coast showed up to do a demo. The practice blends thai massage, acrobatics, and yoga, and has become popular thanks to Jenny and Jason, who teach throughout the SF Bay area and now worldwide. If you missed them at last year’s Yoga Journal Conference, it’s too bad, ’cause they put on an awesome show!

If you need to shake up your yoga practice and have some fun, Acroyoga blows any mellow partner yoga class out of the water. It builds strength and flexibility, with trust and communication skills. The community was very friendly when I stopped by outside the Berkeley Farmer’s market one weekend afternoon. And this Sunday I got help to fly into Super Yogi, balancing my hips on Patrick’s feet and stretching out my arms. Hanging upside down felt great on my spine and neck too.

I like the sense of play and openness in this community. Yogis can take themselves too seriously. Check out a class at www.acroyoga.org. There’s a lot of trainings happening this fall in different cities, and they’re reasonably priced.
