The last uplifting documentary I saw shows how women in Africa came together to stop a civil war. My mom introduced me to “Pray the devil back to hell” after her volunteer trip to Liberia; it left me in awe. So this Thursday, for the 2nd International Women’s Day put on by CARE, I wanted to invite you to see another inspiring film called “Woinshet” at your local theatre. A percentage of the ticket price goes to CARE for their work helping women worldwide.
The film is inspired the book ”Half the Sky” written by Pulitzer winning journalists, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Kristof’s N.Y. Times column follows the problems that face women living in poverty, including crises like violence and rape in the Congo. But “Half the Sky” is a hopeful collection of stories about women overcoming these struggles. The book inspired Marissa Tomei and Lisa Leone to produce the film Woinshet.
The premiere is this Thursday at theatres across all major cities in the U.S. at 7:30 p.m. in an event that includes performances by India Arie, Angelique Kidjo, Michael Franti, and more.
