NY Green foodie tour 2010

LouisaShafa

One of the best things about NY for many people is its restaurants, but to me it’s also the diversity of the people. Living in Brooklyn working on the Meatless Monday Campaign and studying at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, I met so many educated, interesting folks dedicated to healthy, conscious living.

I thought asking them and . . . → Read More: NY Green foodie tour 2010

Beautiful, “unmanicured” Cuba and its organic gardens

This video on Cuba’s food system by Roger Doiron of Kitchen Gardeners International sure makes me want to go check it out. Aside from the curious mix of vintage ’50′s cars and rundown colonial buildings, I’ve heard over and over how impressed people are with the country’s organic farm system. Here Doiron does a good job . . . → Read More: Beautiful, “unmanicured” Cuba and its organic gardens

Doe Bay Resort in Orcas Island

doebay

Have you ever felt pulled towards a certain place for no reason? I’ve been attracted to Orcas Island, in Washington state ever since learning about it.

Doe Bay Resort seems like a particularly nice place to visit to spend some time doing organic gardening and sea kayaking. It’s got cabins, tents, and yurts, with an active yoga, . . . → Read More: Doe Bay Resort in Orcas Island

CA surfer (and whale) paddle for breast cancer

jodie-and-whale1

I love stories like this because they remind us that sometimes when we are disheartened in face of something difficult, we can take matters into our own hands by just doing something. Once we get active towards a certain direction, there’s a momentum that builds, and help shows up.

Not so underground, “Secret San Francisco” still handy for foodies and yogis

I’ve been very low energy this week in the gray winter weather. In the meantime I’ve been enjoying the discussions on the new Secret San francisco Facebook board. People love underground stuff, yet nothing is very secret on this site.

According to this KQED article, In just a week or two it’s expanded to over 50,000 members . . . → Read More: Not so underground, “Secret San Francisco” still handy for foodies and yogis

Underground farmer’s market – street food by the people, for the people

Last week I met up with my friend who has a “Sexysoup” street food cart in the city. Kristin is one of the many successful San Francisco street chefs and a nutritionist promoting quality, tasty food “for the people” in San Francisco.

We headed over to the 2nd Underground Farmer’s Market together over at Capp Street and . . . → Read More: Underground farmer’s market – street food by the people, for the people

“Kind Life” related events in NY and CA

My friend turned me on to Alicia Silverstone’s Kind Life blog. It’s got good content and forum dicussions on everything from restaurants, innovative chefs, how to make vegan french toast to great vegan purses on (the awesome, but overwhelming) handmade goods site Etsy. It’s useful for veggie-friendly people like me, who eat a plant-based diet most . . . → Read More: “Kind Life” related events in NY and CA

A place for recycled art and environmental awareness

Last night I visited the new Remake Lounge in the Green Zebra Environmental Center for a night of food activist mingling and media. This is a space that opened in late August for events, exhibits showing recycled art, and classes on remaking and reusing materials by the people who offer the Green Zebra coupon book.

Currently Carbon . . . → Read More: A place for recycled art and environmental awareness

Saving the world one couch at a time

couchsurfing logo

It sounds like reality TV material: 25 world travelers running a non-profit from their laptops and living communally in a house in San Francisco. But staff and volunteers at CouchSurfing.org’s Base Camp and International Headquarters have little time for drama while striving to better the world ‘one couch at a time.’

Located in the culturally mixed Mission . . . → Read More: Saving the world one couch at a time

The new mobile home

It’s amazing what you can find on the Internet these days. What if you could approach the classifieds with a clear vision of what you were seeking and bring it your way? This week, I set out to find a place to stay in Marin for a couple of nights, closer to where Aaron is currently . . . → Read More: The new mobile home
