Shopping on a budget at the Farmers’ Market

So much produce for around $16

You may not need to buy organic if you’re on a budget and have access to no-spray, locally grown food at your Farmers’ market. You can save a lot this way and learn how your food was produced. Why not find this stuff out? It’s what feeds us. It also pays to become a Farmers’ Market snob and shop around. I got a whole carton of cage-free, organic eggs for less than $4 at the market downtown and so much more for less than $20 on my last visit. . . . → Read More: Shopping on a budget at the Farmers’ Market

Why Michelle Obama means well, but new USDA guidelines won’t do (illustrated!)

Image from Yoni Freedhoff

While Michelle Obama continues to teach kids to garden in the White House Garden, our tax dollars are funding a mono-crop culture heavy in corn and soy. Imagine U.S. disease rates (including child obesity and the growing epidemic of Type II diabetes) if most vegetables weren’t pricier than your average soda or McDonald’s cheeseburger. . . . → Read More: Why Michelle Obama means well, but new USDA guidelines won’t do (illustrated!)

We finally have longer, sunnier days here in the bay area, yay! So I made it a point to start getting some gardening experience this spring at a pretty unique urban farm in San Francisco. The 2.2 acre farm sits on what used to be a vacant lot after the biggest earthquake in recent decades.

Chocolate activists unite! New film and events stand up for Fair trade

cocoa

A new documentary called “The Dark Side of Chocolate” is refreshingly different: 45 minutes long, it shows extensive footage using hidden cameras, and features interviews with corporate honchos to actual kids, some who had escaped and with help returned to their families. Made by award-winning Dutch journalist Miki Mistrati, the movie builds a compelling case against large chocolate companies like Nestle to help stop child trafficking and child labor in the Ivory Coast in Africa. It doesn’t beat you over the head with horrific images either. This February, several events are happening on left and right coasts to promote fair trade and end this social injustice. . . . → Read More: Chocolate activists unite! anniel

A succint environmental spokesperson casually dressed in jeans, Annie skips technical terms from years of research visiting landfills in exchange for everyday language and a down to earth approach. Wearing a smile, she is just as approachable as she is knowledgeable. “Too often, environmentalists aren’t really that fun,” she explains. “We asked if there was a way to turn the volume up on this conversation without guilt, without scientific jargon.” Annie’s “Story of Stuff” videos are now part of a global movement towards accumulating less stuff to save our resources and reduce waste. The latest edition, released today, is called “Story of Electronics,” and focuses on the waste generated by home electronics and gadgetry. . . . → Read More: Annie Leonard interview & “Story of Electronics” release
